Buchanan Ranch Thundereggs Hopping further to the east (about 100 miles), we are in a different thunderegg world completely. The Buchanan Ranch is a long-closed location, sadly, and these eggs are only going to get rarer. They are characterized by a smeared and wavy agate, usually in soft purples and blues, which is dense, wavy and somehow 'untidy' - usually set off by a very pale matrix. I seem to have amassed quite a large collection of these. The reason for that is probably that the Buchanans can be a very tantalizing egg - so often prone to incomplete matrix and suggesting a perfection in their agate that is often not quite there. So then you want to find another and push forward towards that ultimate Buchanan that you know must be out there somewhere! Also, the buchanans come from several different beds in the area, distinguished by the colour of the matrix. The 'normal', classic buchanans are very pale, but a few exist that are dark - sometimes very dark - or even greenish. A very variable location in short, as can be seen below. I would personally class eggs 1 & 3 below as exceptional examples of the classic Buchanan. A very collectable egg, in short! Located in Eastern Oregon, east of the city of Burns |
