Friedrichsroda - Hedda's Cross Thundereggs

A close neighbor of Brandtkopf, as can clearly be seen in the general colour scheme of the stones. However, it does seem to stand out in that the matrix is a brighter shade of red, and also notably softer, being next to impossible to raise a shine on while polishing. Instead you end up with the effect of a totally matte red base texture on which a complex pattern of shiny veins and inclusions is laid out. Likewise, it's porosity makes it a very dodgy stone indeed for resin and other lapidary tricks. In terms of core, these are commonly crystal, often with traces of decay and sometimes muddled in with other materials. When agate does form, it sometimes appears as red bands like Brandtkopf.

This is a relatively new discovery (2011) by a local collector and friend of mine and named after his daughter Hedda. It is a very small bed and I was somewhat disturbed to hear that it has ALREADY been built over and lost, as is the fate of so many locations in Germany. That makes this a very short lived location indeed and very few of these have found or will ever find their way into the collectors market. For me, this makes them among the most precious thundereggs in Thuringia - and I would also say that it's soft brick red colour makes it one of the most beautiful matrixes in Thuringia. Worth a close look and, if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one of these, worth treasuring.
