Teufelskanzel / Devil's Pulpit / Oberthal, St.Wendel Oberthal/Teufelskanzel agates come from a small hill known as Teufelskanzel near the small town of Oberthal. Teufelskanzel translates as that old classic name 'Devil's Pulpit' and legend says that this hill is a site where the Devil used to preach to his witch congregation. I bought this stone as an Oberthal agate, but when a german expert wrote and told me the details of its location, I remembered that I had actually heard of 'Devil's Pulpit Thundereggs' - which must be the same site. So perhaps the most appropriate name for this stone would be the resonant and dramatic Teufelskanzel. That's what i am going to call it anyway! Could one speculate that stones like this might even have something to do with the name of that hill? Is there something eerie about this? Is there a touch or rawhead and bloodybones in this rock? Seeing this jutting from the hillside, cracking fissures of red? Or is that just my rather gothic imagination? However, all that is a blast from the past - as are these thundereggs - since the Teufelskanzel hill is now built over with houses. A fine site lost under the march of civilization. |
