Mönchstal / Ohra Dam, Thuringia

The Ohra Dam dams the river Ohra near the town of Luisenthal in Thuringia. When it was being renovated between 1997 and 2000, thundereggs were discovered nearby at a place called Mönchstal. However, this is a forbidden location and, with the dam work finished, the site quickly faded, even in the 'underground', not because it was out of reach but because it was too much within reach! Because it was too close to the dam and to nearby streets for any kind of digging. That makes this a very short-lived site.

These are chunky stones and usually relatively large. They have a rough and ready nature to them - by no stretch can they be called fine or subtle! But they are very individual with that wonderfully meaty matrix and the coarsest grains of any stone i have seen. Take them on their own terms and they are really quite a striking stone.
