Luisenthal - Mönchstal

The Ohra Dam dams the river Ohra near the town of Luisenthal in Thuringia. When it was being renovated between 1997 and 2000, thundereggs were discovered nearby at a place called Mönchstal. However, this is a forbidden location and, with the dam work finished, the site quickly faded, even in the 'underground', not because it was out of reach but because it was too much within reach! Because it was too close to the dam and to nearby streets for any kind of digging. That makes this a short-lived site.

These are chunky stones and usually relatively large and have a very distinctive brick red matrix with massive granuals and inclusions. The cores are usually (though far from exclusivly) quite fine bands of agate surrounding hollow caves. The agate tends towards a very dark and strong red, sometimes edged with green mineralisation. They are a very individual stone and, Ii think, very beautiful.
