Friedrichroda - Gottlob Thundereggs
This is possibly my favorite German location, thanks to the richness and complexity that can develop. They have a substantial and very earthy matrix and the cores can be phenomenally complicated, ranging from pure agate to pure crystal and stranger things. Amethyst is also quite common here, only adding to the magic of the mix. Like most german stones, they are prone to flaws, which can sometimes be frustrating, sometimes even adding something positive, as in this ghostly specimen. The name translates as 'Praise Gawd' - maybe a name rooted in old german history, or maybe what you cry on first seeing these wonderful rocks!
